Littoral Sentinel

Sea Totem

Keith Banks
2024

Created from reclaimed sea-weathered timber and naturally worn beach stone, Littoral Sentinel explores the meeting point between land and sea, where time, erosion and the elements gradually transform ordinary materials into something extraordinary.

Inspired by the weathered remains of coastal groynes and forgotten maritime structures, the sculpture preserves the history embedded within the timber rather than concealing it. Every fissure, worn edge and natural contour bears the imprint of wind, salt and tide, while carefully placed beach stones create a subtle dialogue between permanence and change.

Rather than recreating nature, Littoral Sentinel acknowledges it as a collaborator. The sea has already begun the work; the artist simply recognises the form that has emerged.

Each sculpture is created individually from reclaimed coastal timber selected for its unique character. No two works are ever identical. While future sculptures may continue this exploration, each is a unique original shaped by the material itself.

Suitable for both interior and exterior settings.
